How to Safely Rideshare during a Pandemic

Whether you work for a ridesharing company or depend on ridesharing services to get to work and run essential errands, the COVID-19 pandemic has likely hit you hard.  As states begin to reopen and travel increases, riders and drivers of shared vehicles will be searching for the best ways to protect themselves.  While there are a few unique risks associated with ride sharing, it is still possible to follow the safe and good hygiene practices recommended by health authorities as ways to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a page of recommendations for rideshare, taxi, limo, and other passenger drivers-for-hire.  It includes

  • Encouraging drivers and passengers to wear a face covering, especially as most vehicles make it impossible to follow social distancing measures
  • Keeping cleaning and disinfectant spray or disposable wipes and disposal trash bags in all vehicles
  • Practicing proper hand hygiene - i.e. wash hands regularly and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow

As of May 18th, Uber is requiring all drivers and passengers to wear face coverings or masks.  While Lyft hasn’t yet established a similar rule, it does require drivers and passengers to follow local mask guidelines.  Both companies are providing masks and cleaning supplies to drivers, an action taken by taxi companies as well.  Many taxis that did not previously have partitions to separate drivers and passengers are being outfitted with them now.

If renting a car, whether short-term or long-term, this article by Consumer Reports recommends that all drivers wipe down door handles, the steering wheel, and the gearshift at a minimum.
